Friends are relatives you make for yourself.
[Eustache Deschamps]
I have always known Robert Pence. I’ve counted him as my friend for seventy years. I bid him farewell just before Christmas with the gratitude that I’d had the opportunity to count him as my friend for as long as I did.
When I was a small child, he was enough older that I looked up to him and considered him brilliant. When I first left home to go to college, it eased my homesickness to know he was nearby on the same campus. When we were both in the military, it was a comfort to know that he was stationed just up the coast. When I edited a magazine, he took magnificant photos for the cover. When I needed air in my tires, advice on home repairs, or information about anything, he helped me.
I shared his fascination with antique machinery, railroading, computers and the minutia of history. I admired his talent with composition and attention to detail in his photography. He enlarged my world, helped heal the bruises of life experiences, and shared the depth of his spiritual self. Although we weren’t relatives, one of the greatest complements I ever received was when he introduced me by saying, “This is my sister….”
After all of these years, I still look up to him and think he was brilliant.
My deepest sympathy for your loss. I believe I purchased one of Robert’s cameras, a Leica IIIb, serial number 331942. I would love to honor his memory by using it. I’m only sad I cannot see any of his work after searching.
A camera is like another’s eyes; what they have seen, experienced, loved and chose to remember in images. I only hope I can keep his spirit alive with his old camera.
I have the images from his website on my computer and plan to put them back online soon. Thank you for your kind words.
Best Regards, Katherine

Hi Katherine.
I am very late in sending you this note, but I want to thank you and Louise for kindly notifying me about Bob’s passing; your tribute is nicely done. I think of him often; I miss his emails and his marvelous sense of humor most of all.
I must not have a correct email for you, but I do want to pass along Don O.’s contact information, as you had asked about his expertise in helping preserve some of Bob’s photography. Let me know if I can be of any help. Thank you.
Wow!! What a tribute!! Bob always has been my favorite Pence Boy!! Its sad to see him go. But at least he isn’t hurting anymore!! Xx
Katherine, I am sorry for your loss, I’m sure I have heard you talk about him. Keep your good memories in your heart.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I know how much Robert meant to you.
Katherine, I am so sorry for your loss of Robert. I know how much he meant to you and I’m sure you meant just as much to him, if not even more. You have been by his side through so much and I know it meant all to him. My love to you and thank you for sharing his life with me. You were a TRUE friend to him in so many ways over so many years.
Love you.
Katherine,
How sweet of you to share this and give us a glimpse of a a very special person. And what I take from this tribute is that I feel certain he knew how appreciative you were of him. It is a reminder to let the special people in our lives know how special they are to us while we can.
Thank you for sharing.
