Here is a photo of one of the designs I have developed for autumn knitting classes. The fingerless mitts are knit using sock-weight yarn, a palm increase, and an interesting cable treatment. The short mittens that add outdoor warmth to the mitt, are knit back and forth using worsted weight yarn. To finish, they have a subtle seam up the back under the buttons. The combination of mitt and mittens reminded me of a tuxedo in some way.
Knitting, writing and other joys 
I agree with Jackie — this is a great idea. You can continue to type and use the iPhone and iPad with the fingerless mittens and then add the overmitten when going out. You reminded me of one of my professors in seminary who was studying in Scotland. The heating oil was so expensive that after his wife and kids went off to work and school, he turned off the heat and wrote on his dissertation in the cold. He had no such elegant arrangement as these, so he had to simply cut the fingers off his gloves. He’s now president of Louisville Seminary. These are an elegant solution to cold days.
I know this is off topic, Katherine.. But JoLene Treace, The wonderful woman who made so many designs, so creative.. is soon to be resting in the arms of the Lord.. Her fight with Cancer is soon to be over…
