I keep my end tables full of
knitting and quilting
so I don’t have to dust them.

I’ve dressed up my bedroom for the holidays. My new quilt (Lincoln Star) is finished so I paired it with new, navy blue flannel sheets. The pillow slips were sewn by Darlene, one of my knitting students. I love the touch of red she added to the cuffs. The small pillows are samples from one of the fall knitting classes that I taught at Sarah Jane’s. They are variations of the heirloom counterpane pattern. The bargello quilt wall hanging above the bed was made by my daughter, Ellen, the lamp was turned from wild cherry wood by my father, and the bedstead was handmade from walnut wood by a gentleman here in Indiana. I cleared my knitting off of the end table to take the photo.

Winter days are very short in northern Indiana so, when it gets dark, my little dog and I curl up in this cozy warmth. He naps while I knit and read. How can I be anything less than happy?

Moon Over the Mountain

I like to think that the moon is there even if I am not looking at it.
[Albert Einstein]

Moon over the mountain

Thirty years ago, I lived in western North Carolina and, as a member of the Cherokee Sewing Circle on Qualla Boundary, I sewed many variations of the Drunkard’s Path quilt block pattern. In the process, I applied the drunkard’s path concept to the rectangular block, Moon Over the Mountain. I pieced a quilt and commenced quilting it. I’ve moved five or six times since then, each time burying it deeper into packing boxes.

When I was working on finishing the quilts shown in my 2009 summer blog posts, I found the 30-year old quilt about half hand quilted. It reminded me of my daughter’s logo so I finished quilting it, sewed pewter sheep buttons on it, and mailed it to her for Christmas. She called to say she opened it and loved it so I’ll call this variation, Shepherd’s Moon.

P.S. It snowed enough today  to clear the walk so I shot the photo in the masthead to record our first snow of the winter.

Lincoln Star Quilt

When life throws you scraps, make a quilt.
[Author Unknown]

I’ve spent the summer finishing projects (some of which I started over thirty years ago). Here is Toby holding down my latest quilt top. I call it “Lincoln Star.” If anyone knows its real name, do let me know. Since I’m hand quilting two quilt tops already, this one is going to a lady who does lovely machine quilting so it can be finished before I’m 110.

See the braided rug in Toby’s photo? My grandma made that with scraps of fabric. She could make pretty and useful things out of next to nothing.

Keeping Busy

You owe it to everyone you love (including yourself)
to find pockets of tranquility in your busy world.

I’m working on piecing another quilt that I started a couple of decades ago. This one is going to take awhile—a couple of weeks at least. Meanwhile, I’m also gathering patterns, etc. for the fall classes I’m planning to teach at Sarah Jane’s Yarn Shop. Two are coming up in August.

Quilting

Any day spent sewing, is a good day.

HOT OFF THE MACHINE—I finished sewing the border onto this quilt top this morning. This was another UFO (unfinished object), and now it is ready to go to the quilter. I do hand quilting but, in the spirit of getting this quilt finished, I’m sending it to a lady who does a lovely job with a quilting machine. That will free me up to finish hand quilting two more quilts that I started a number of years ago. My furry buddy, Toby, held the quilt top down while I took the photo. I’ll get a better photo after it is quilted and bound.
